Ajwain contains thymol, a phenol with antispasmodic and carminative properties. Carminatives relax the smooth muscle of the intestinal wall, allowing trapped gas to pass and reducing bloating and cramping. Ajwain water made by boiling a teaspoon of seeds in two cups of water for five minutes is a traditional preparation for indigestion and gas.
This remedy is safe for most adults in culinary amounts. For occasional indigestion and bloating, ajwain water is a practical, low-risk, and generally effective option. If digestive symptoms are frequent or severe, or accompanied by blood, fever, or significant weight loss, a doctor’s evaluation is required.
