The bedroom and bathroom are the highest-risk areas. Non-slip mats in the bathroom and shower, grab rails next to the toilet and bath, and adequate lighting between the bedroom and bathroom at night address the majority of indoor fall risk. Remove loose rugs from high-traffic areas.
Medication review is often overlooked in fall prevention. Sedating medications including antihistamines and some blood pressure drugs significantly increase fall risk. Vision checks are equally important. Combining strength and balance exercises with environmental modification reduces fall risk by 40 percent or more in older adults.
